Sticky Faith: Thai Cannabis Amulets

This picture of the cannabis-amulet went viral in 2023 with more than 18,000 shares on Facebook

During the early days of legalization in Thailand, a unique trend emerged within these communities; local growers and craftsmen creating their own cannabis-amulet.

You might think that joking around with Buddha mixing with sacred objects would be a taboo. But here’s the kicker: Thais have a wicked sense of humor. Nothing is taken too seriously. They’ll joke while shrug off problems that would send anyone else spiraling. It’s kind of a grounded magic, sticky spiritual, and irreverently human.

In Thailand more than 30% of the population works in agriculture, with many owning land in the countryside. Beyond farming, many of the locals hold deep spiritual beliefs rooted in Buddhism and especially in the power of Buddha amulets, which are said to carry powerful blessings such as fortune, charm, wealth, protection, and attraction of the opposite sex.

Ancient Thai buddha amulets are often by using mud or clay that has been blessed by the monk and then pressed into wooden or metal moulds.

“หลวงพ่อเขียว รุ่นเหนียวติดมือ ก้าวแรกบอกไม่เป็นไร พอก้าวต่อไปหน้ามืด!”

The holy green monk, sticky icky edition, first steps are good, the next one you’re out!”

Even though full legalization might still be a ways off, the Thais are discovering that putting cannabis back in the spotlight isn’t such a bad thing after all especially for a plant that’s been part of the Thai pharmacopeia for centuries

Sure, we all know cannabis can be smoked, cooked, or used as medicine, but who would’ve thought you could make amulets out of it too? Buddhist amulets have always been about luck, protection, and a little superstition.

And now, thanks to some inventive farmers, faith and weed are walking hand in hand. Combining spirituality, luck, and sticky green goodness. Am i rite?
